Dharma Productions is finally moving forward with Dostana 2, and it looks like the long wait may finally pay off. The makers have reportedly locked a fresh, progressive script that stays true to the heart of the original while adding a modern twist. A source close to the development revealed, “Dostana 2 will feature Vikrant Massey with Lakshya, and will mark the launch pad of a debutant as the female lead. The makers are aiming to take the film on floors in January 2026, and release in the end of next year.” The film is expected to strike a strong balance between entertainment and contemporary storytelling.

The original Dostana, which hit theatres back in 2008 with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, was a huge hit and went on to become a cult classic in the rom-com genre. Since then, there have been constant whispers about a sequel, but nothing materialized—until now. With Vikrant Massey officially locked in alongside Lakshya, the film is shaping up to bring a youthful energy to the franchise while keeping its fun and quirky tone.

Contrary to some recent speculation, Dostana 2 is not being made for OTT but is designed as a full-fledged theatrical experience. “Dostana 2 is being conceptualized as a theatrical film, with music, comedy, romance, and drama. Talks are on with filmmakers, and a director will be locked in a fortnight,” the source added. The aim is to create an all-out entertainer that can connect with both fans of the original and a newer generation of moviegoers.

Before jumping into Dostana 2, Vikrant Massey will finish work on two major projects—the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar biopic and Don 3—both of which are expected to wrap up by the end of 2025. He’s clearly making bold choices across genres, and Dostana 2 seems like a natural next step in his expanding filmography. Meanwhile, Dharma has a busy lineup ahead, with Dhadak 2 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsikumari also set for 2026, along with Tu Meri Main Tera and Nagzilla kicking off this year. Among all these, Dostana 2 stands out as a much-awaited comeback for one of Bollywood’s most talked-about franchises.
