Materialists Trailer: Dakota Johnson Is Torn Between Mr Perfect Pedro Pascal and Toxic Ex Chris Evans
It’s not every day you find yourself torn between Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, but our girl Dakota Johnson is just lucky! After building anticipation with two intriguing posters, the makers of Materialists have finally dropped the official trailer, and it doesn’t disappoint. Directed by Academy Award-nominated Celine Song, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed Past Lives, the film promises a fresh and emotional take on modern romance.
Set against the backdrop of New York City, the film follows Lucy (Johnson), a young matchmaker who has a gift of connecting people. However, she can’t apply it to her own life. She finds herself caught between the allure of her ideal match and the unresolved emotions of an imperfect ex.

The trailer opens with a voiceover that introduces Lucy as, “In the world of matchmaking, no one plays the game better than Lucy.” We see a montage of her clients and the matches she had successfully made. The next scenes show Lucy confronting her boyfriend John (Evans) and arguing with him in the middle of a street. John asks her, “Do you know how hard it is to make you happy?”, while Lucy looks visibly upset. Then the scene cuts to her meeting Henry Castillo (Pascal) at a party. While Henry seems like the perfect man to her, she keeps getting drawn to her former beau. She also warns Henry not to date her, as she is looking to marry the next guy she dates.
The trailer teases a love triangle that feels real, flawed and deeply human. The film is described as a modern take on true love.
