Among the many gems of Indian cinema, few films have left a mark as deep as Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Released in 1999, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam starred Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Ajay Devgn, and was much more than a love story, it was a blend of emotion, sacrifice, and stunning visuals that established Bhansali as a true storyteller. As the film marks 26 years, the director looks back on what gave this epic romance its lasting charm.

“Yes, there was love in the air. But not just between them; there was a lot of affection among all of us. Zohra Sehgalji, Helen aunty, Salman, Aishwarya, Vikram Gokhale, Smita Jayekar – we were like one big family. I don’t think I’ve had such a fulfilling experience shooting any other film,” Bhansali shared.

Bhansali went on to say that he rarely sees such bonds between actors today. “Today, it’s purely professional. And honestly, I’m fine with that. Times have changed,” he added.

Reportedly, Salman and Aishwarya grew closer while filming Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which also reflected in the chemistry between them in the film.

On being asked if he thinks Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is his finest work, Bhansali said, “It’s certainly my gentlest film. There is a certain innocence in the way the romance unfolds. After my first film (Khamoshi: The Musical) didn’t do well, I wanted to create something without compromise since I was forced to shoot an alternate, happy ending in it due to pressure from distributors who did not want a tragic conclusion. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was the film where I stood firm on the ending I had envisioned from the beginning.”

Even after more than two decades, the film continues to strike a chord with audiences, thanks to its soul-stirring music, poetic storytelling, and unforgettable performances that defined an era.
