Roshan Mathew’s latest outing, Uyir, is all set to reach a wider audience through its digital premiere. The makers have announced that the police procedural will begin streaming on JioHotstar from August 4, a little over a month after its theatrical release on June 26.

Directed by veteran filmmaker M Padmakumar, Uyir opened to mixed reviews upon its release but drew attention for its grounded storytelling and its roots in real-life police investigations. With its OTT debut now confirmed, viewers who missed the film in cinemas will soon be able to catch the investigative thriller from the comfort of their homes.

A Murder Investigation Inspired By True Events

Uyir follows the story of Ajeeb Rahman, a probationary sub-inspector played by Roshan Mathew, who is posted to the Dharmadam Police Station in Kannur. What begins as a routine assignment soon turns into a far more challenging investigation after the decomposed body of a woman is discovered inside an abandoned well.

As Ajeeb digs deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of interconnected incidents that gradually reveal hidden truths. Inspired by real-life incidents from the career of a police officer, the film blends procedural investigation with emotional drama, presenting a crime story that unfolds through methodical police work rather than conventional action.

Roshan, who has steadily built a reputation for choosing unconventional roles across Malayalam and Hindi cinema, anchors the film as a young officer navigating the pressures of his first major investigation.

The supporting cast features Baiju Santhosh, Vinod Sagar, Shruthy Menon, Saiyami Kher, Vineeth Thattil, Divya M Nair, Santhosh Thrivikraman, Shaju Sreedhar, Shrikant Murali, Athulya Chandra and Mahesh Shetty, each contributing to the layered narrative surrounding the central mystery.

A Screenplay Penned By Real-Life Police Officers

One of Uyir’s biggest talking points is the team behind its story. The film is based on the experiences of police officer Anshad, while the screenplay has been co-written by another serving officer, Shaji Marad, along with singer and lyricist Nikhil K Menon.

Shaji is no stranger to crime dramas, having previously contributed to acclaimed films such as Ela Veezha Poonchira and Paathirathri. His familiarity with investigative storytelling lends authenticity to Uyir’s procedural approach.

Behind the camera, the film brings together an experienced technical crew. Cinematography is handled by Ajay David Kachappilly, whose visuals capture the moody atmosphere of the investigation, while Renjan Abraham takes care of editing. The music has been composed by Manikandan Ayyappa, complementing the film’s tense and understated tone. Uyir has been produced by Santhosh Thrivikraman under the banner of Vow Cinemas.
