Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravaani has shared a major update on the music of SS Rajamouli’s highly anticipated film Varanasi. Speaking during his ongoing US tour, the composer revealed that he will begin working on the film’s background score in September and aims to complete it by January next year, dedicating nearly five months exclusively to the project.

The update offers fans a glimpse into the post-production schedule of one of Indian cinema’s biggest upcoming releases, which is slated to hit theatres worldwide on April 7, 2027.

A creative partnership spanning decades

Keeravaani and Rajamouli have shared one of Indian cinema’s most successful director-composer collaborations, working together on every one of the filmmaker’s projects since Student No. 1.
Reflecting on their long-standing association, Keeravaani once described their collaboration as almost “telepathic,” explaining that their creative understanding allows ideas to flow effortlessly. He added that working with Rajamouli never feels stressful because both approach every project with complete clarity and conviction, eliminating uncertainty during the creative process.

A grand Latin-inspired dance number

Apart from the background score, Varanasi is also expected to feature a lavish dance number starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra. Veteran choreographer Shankar recently revealed that the song has been conceived in a distinctive Latin style following detailed discussions with Rajamouli.

The sequence is expected to feature a specialised dance troupe from the UK, while Keeravaani is reportedly blending Indian musical elements with vibrant Latin rhythms to create a visually and musically grand spectacle.

Varanasi boasts an ensemble cast that also includes Prithviraj Sukumaran and Prakash Raj. With Rajamouli at the helm and Keeravaani composing the soundtrack, the film remains one of the most eagerly awaited Indian releases of 2027. Promotional activities, including the music launch, are expected to begin several months ahead of its theatrical release.
